The dartboard: layout and measurements

A dartboard has 20 number segments, two narrow rings and a centre. Here you can see how the numbers are arranged, what each area scores and how to hang the board correctly.

The order of the numbers

Clockwise from the 20 at the top: 20, 1, 18, 4, 13, 6, 10, 15, 2, 17, 3, 19, 7, 16, 8, 11, 14, 9, 12, 5. High and low numbers alternate so that a stray dart is punished: next to the 20 are only the 1 and the 5.

The areas and what they score

  • Single: the large area of a segment scores the value of the number.
  • Double: the narrow outer ring scores twice the number, a double 20 is 40 points.
  • Triple: the narrow inner ring scores three times the number, a triple 20 is 60 points.
  • Outer bull: the green ring around the centre scores 25 points.
  • Bullseye: the red centre scores 50 points and counts as a double.

Measurements and distances

Height of the bullseye above the floor1.73 m
Distance to the throwing line (horizontal)2.37 m

Measurements follow the common tournament rules of the World Darts Federation (WDF), rounded. The height is measured from the floor to the centre of the bullseye.

How to hang the board correctly

The 20 segment points up. Hang the bullseye at a height of 1.73 m, mark the throwing line 2.37 m in front of the board and light the board well. The diagonal of about 2.93 m lets you check that height and distance are right.
